Traditionally Wimbledon, the high summer event of the year, is a chance for ladies to dig out their prettiest colourful dresses. However, what do you do when each day appears to be colder and damper than the one before? Ever hopeful, the first few days some stoic few, sported their flimsy floaty frocks and froze. Not a good look as they dripped into the Debenture Lounge. Many, visibly shivering over their strawberries and cream.
However, by the second week, word spread. What to wear when summer is more like winter? Crisp whites, soft pinks and pastels are just not working this year. Thus, safe cream became the staple of fashionistas, playing it safe, intent on looking suitably chic, whatever the elements threw at them. Many even went as far as ditching the strappy sandals for sensible flats.
Camilla, the Queen Consort and her sister Annabel Elliot obviously got the memo, adorning the front row of the Royal Box on Wednesday, hatless but looking lovely in cream. I spotted celebrity singer Nicole Scherzinger bravely baring her arms, but stunning in a milky low-scooped neckline number, smiling sweetly as she ignored the biting wind. I bumped into tennis enthusiast, Elaine Paige (small in stature but with the biggest voice) looking the part in a smart cream trouser suit.
So my fashion tip for the way forward is to always ensure a well-cut off-white suit is hanging next to that little black dress.
