WHAT A WORTHY CAUSE

By David Whitney

Indeed, what a worthy cause as the XLIV Deia International Festival of Music organised another superb concert that brought the invited guests to their feet. For all those that enjoy not only classical music, but jazz, Tango and much more then this Festival is for you and do check out their website for a full schedule of the Seasons concerts. A full on schedule this year thanks to their Director Alfredo Oyaguez who has worked tirelessly in bringing music for all to this wonderful island. So it was just a few weeks ago that the La Residence, a Belmond Hotel, played host to what was a Charity concert of post bob, Afro-Cuban jazz. I know from Hanna the hard working PR that rain could be in the air and in the mountains of Delia who knows what the weather will be given to us. Thankfully, the skies were blue and any clouds and rain were far away from the concert. After a short but amusing introduction of the concert the audience at the concert area above the hotel were soon enjoying an unforgettable concert. What a location as the sun slowly dipped below the mountains as the music echoed through the still air of the evening as dusk fell. The lead player Pol Omedes and his jazz quintet certainly brought smiles and delight to all. With amazing piano playing, trumpet, drums, cello and tom tom drums the synergy and closeness of the players was clear to see. Each also doing their own solo playing. These were musicians of the highest quality as expected in the Festival and nobody was disappointed. A break and a few drinks before the music started again and encores were demanded and given. A friendly band and photos, chats with all after the concert made for a memorable evening once again.Yes, a charity event and donations made as all donations go to the Mallorca Preservation Foundation. www.mallorcapreservation.org. Once again the hotel kindly doubled the donations raised. Do check out the good work of the Foundation keeping and preserving the Mallorcan countryside and renovating past areas sadly neglected. We should all be grateful that this island has such organisations without which our island would not be as beautiful and preserved for all to enjoy. So for those who enjoy classical music, jazz and much more there are many concerts to come so do check out www.dimf.com for a full schedule.
