From the steps in life, or climbing the career ladder, to salary steps, our everyday lives also glide these steps in the form of stairs. But do stairs have to be purely functional, or can they also have a form? Furthermore, old buildings and staircases may look completely different in a new design.
“Stairs first have a functional purpose but it always has been an element which was showing the social position of the person who was owning the house.
Nowadays, stairs allow an architect or an interior architect, to put his touch, his signature which can be recognized by people in the field.
The staircase and the patio in Palacio can Marques were the centre elements which were showing the grandeur of this building for people who couldn’t have access to the private rooms” – says Aline Matsika, who transferred this former palace into a lovely boutique hotel in Palmas Oldtown. Her Partner Kim Schindelhauer bought this palace 25 years ago as his private mansion – as we know, if a woman comes across, things turn- mostly for the better. In this case, Aline convinced her partner, to rethink and the result is one of the best hotels in Palma. Since May 2021 also been managed by the Puro Group, which overlooks several locations around Mallorca – especially the beach clubs – called Puro Beach. The Redesign started from top to bottom – she began with the most spacious room – The Riad – and worked her way down. All carpets and chandeliers are handmade and well-selected. Even the paintings in the rooms are carefully selected and unique.
Each Room has its personality and style, that why every room has a name instead of a number. As a guest, a normal key will be handed out. It’s not a hotel, it is mostly a private palace which treats guests like kings and queens.
“It was always our goal to find a usage of the building for the public. The solution to convert it into a hotel matches this perfectly.
Palacio Can Marqués is a distinctive building that has regained its letters of nobility” – noted Aline Matsika. I couldn’t agree more.
Those who have little sense for functionality but for aesthetics will find these amazing staircases inspiring. A staircase is not only functional, but it can serve as a stunning focal point and make a strong style statement. From dramatic and dynamic to sculptural and sophisticated, here is a curation of some offbeat staircase designs that are highly functional and are a visual delight. Check out the interplay of colour and cut-outs within this exquisite helical stair. The bright green hues of the handrail and tall indoor plant infuse a nature-inspired vibe into this neutral space.
Light up your stairs: Linear strips of LED lights infuse a luxe vibe within each tread and create an interesting pattern. The glass railing offers visual lightness and completes the look. The fluid form of this staircase is a complicated form of engineering and a beautiful piece of art. It’s a great way to infuse a dramatic and playful vibe into the space. Designed from a continuous sheet of metal, this open staircase creates an interesting pattern that exudes simplicity, while its sculptural form exhibits sleek materiality as one moves up and down through this space. From its swirling shape to the curved convex railing and wedge-shaped treads, this metal staircase is all about curves and lends a decorative quality to the space. Just see how this staircase blurs the line between art and function.
Speaking of abstract innovative design not only works indoors, it could be the house but a tiny version.
Tiny homes gained popularity a couple of years ago, and since then they’ve cemented their place in the world of architecture. What started as a cute little trend is now turning into a serious option for home spaces. They are a space-saving and eco-friendly living solution that reduces the load on Mother Earth. They’re simple and minimal alternatives to the imposing and materialistic homes that seem to have taken over.
A micro-home in Napoles, Ecuador with two interesting brick forms that are connected via a glass bridge that relies deeply on passive heating and cooling. The weekend home occupies 700 square feet and was built using locally sourced brick, steel, concrete, and glass. Built from local materials and constructed by local crew and craftsmen. Another example, the nest. The exterior of the small house is clad in black board-and-batten wood siding, which gives the home a modern and contemporary feel, accentuated by a long sloping roof on one side, that also shelters the outdoor patio with a unique layout, unlike typical tiny homes. Seems more spacious and larger than it is.
What would the column be without the newest gadgets? The Tablefarm is exactly what its name suggests. A tabletop garden that grows your food for you. The tablefarm’s focus is on microgreens, which are probably more nutrient-rich than actual veggies, packing as much as 10 to 40 times more nutrition in their small leaves and stems. If you’re wondering what microgreens are, they’re vegetables and herbs harvested just as they develop their first set of true leaves in about 7 to 10 days. They contain just as many vitamins and minerals as they would as full-grown plants — or even more and are ridiculously easy and quick to grow.
This clothes purifier is a mini wardrobe with a large mirror that not only purifies your clothes but also your room when you leave its door open – much friendlier than how my refrigerator acts when I do the same thing with it. As dust pollution and pollen allergies increase, this sleek home appliance offers a solution by blasting precise gushes of air on the hung clothes to remove the dust and pollen. The continuous air circulation means no particles are left behind on the clothing. It allows you to select settings for different types of clothing items, different materials, and cleansing options on its user interface screen.
Its dual cleaning system then sprays nano-electrolyzed water onto the clothing, absorbing and removing odour and leftover dust particles. After that, the clothes are dried and dehumidified in a low-temperature setting – ensuring your clothes come out clean and wrinkle-free thanks to its intricate 4-part system and a systematic cleansing process. Once your clothes are out, leave the door open and let its dehumidifying and air purifying systems work to cleanse your indoor air as well.
If you’re a fan of saunas, it would probably be a nice thing to have a semi-portable one that you can take with you, disassemble, assemble easily, and put up in various terrains and places. It will of course be a big undertaking and maybe it would be easier to just look for a sauna that’s near to where you’re vacationing or staying but that shouldn’t stop designers from coming up with something innovative when it comes to this kind of structure. It has a double-layer glass wall that lets you still have a view of the mountains forests or beach where you have installed the sauna. It also uses cross-laminated timber panels that are layer-glued and stand on four legs so you still have a stable yet flexible structure and can easily be assembled and transported.
