FOUR HANDS FIVE HANDS PIANO CONCERT

By David Whitney

What a Season Finale for The Deia International Music Festival organised by it’s talented Director Alfredo Oyaguez. An amazing end to a wonderful season of classical music which took place at the beautiful finca Hotel Sa Bassa Rotja in Porreres on the evening of Friday October 1st. The Festival came concluded after some 34 concerts held in Son Morroig, Sineu and Sa Bassa Rotja. Over 2000 attended the concerts which sadly had limited places due to restrictions but all enjoyed many evenings of music from the most accomplished musicians from Spain, Russia, Bulgaria and Argentina. A delight to behold as was the final concert of the series.
The Festival welcomed Josep Colom, from Barcelona who is one of the most famous and masterful pianists of Spain as many will know. Accompanied by Carmen Garcia Delight from Madrid who owes her training to the great pianist Gonzalo Soriana. Both have toured Europe and have many awards and recognitions from the World of Classical music. So it was that we sat down in the historical restaurant of the hotel. A perfect venue for the concert with an atmosphere bringing peace and tranqulity to what was to begin.
The grand piano was ready as the two pianists came to entertain us with the works of Brahms, Schubert, Mozart and Debussy. Four hands is so difficult and the need for skill is without saying as the hands of Josep and Carmen glided across the keys, sometimes hands crossed but the music flowed as the room filled with the sound of notes profound. From slow pieces to fast, all was flawless as the guests relaxed and some enjoyed a meal and of course some necessary vino.
I say 5 hands as Alfredo, himself an accomplished pianist sat by the piano and turned the music sheets. No mean task but necessary on this evening of four hands piano playing. Both Josep and Carmen rose after each piece and were loudly applauded for providing us with such beautiful music and mesmerising all with such talent. It was another evening to remember when the concert and indeed the season concluded. We look forward to the 2022 Festival in anticipation and hopefully with no restrictions to limit audiences as all deserve to enjoy music of such quality and beauty.
So for myself, I was privileged to have dinner after the concert with Josep and Carmen, Alfredo and others. An evening of music and an excellent vino came sadly to an end. Well done to all and a thank you to Alfredo for organising another superb Deia International Music Festival.
