Toni Nadal, tournament director, announced: “Feliciano Lopez will receive an invitation to play the Mallorcan tournament. We are happy to receive each year an extremely good player field. Surely because of the quality of our grass courts, but luckily the island is also well known for its beauty and and stunningly beautiful environment”. Feliciano, famous for being an expert player on grass, returns to Mallorca where he won his 500th victory on the ATP circuit.
Sustainability as a fundamental pillar of the event
Tennis has been the focus of the presentation but not the only one, “we will have the best players in the world but the ATP250 Mallorca Championships is more than a tennis tournament” expressed Edwin Weindorfer, “we want to be an event of reference for Calvià and for the whole island; therefore this year we have taken a step forward in sustainability.”
In this way, the tournament today introduced the Austrian hydration brand waterdrop®, as one of the main sponsors of the event. For the tournament this is a great sustainable alliance as one of the main drivers of the tournament. The brand aims to encourage people to drink more water and, in a sustainable way. For this purpose, waterdrop® will provide Mallorca Championship with smart hydration player’s benches on the court, but also innovative hydration solutions, including hydration stations and bar for the public. In addition, the tournament and waterdrop® will donate €1 to the Mallorca Preservation Fund for every refillable bottle purchased at the tournament. It is expected that with the sale of these bottles the tournament will save the use of more than 50,000 plastic bottles during the event. “Our mission is to inspire people around the world to drink more water in a sustainable way. We are developing ecological solutions to promote responsible consumption of tap water and avoid the outdated idea of having to bottle and ship unsustainable and mostly unhealthy beverages. “added Martin Murray, CEO & founder of waterdrop®
The spectators of the tournament will be provided with free filtered water provided with the help of a local partner named KM Zero.
One of the sustainability initiatives is the recycling of most of the tennis balls that we will use in the tournament. In Spain more than 19 million tennis balls are used every year and the main part of them goes into landfill. Thanks to GreenBall the tournament seeks to raise awareness of this problem by recycling and converting into energy more than 1000 balls that will be used during the tournament.
Mallorca Championships Opening Gala: An event for Ukraine
“Much more than a tennis tournament.” The opening ceremony of the tournament will be held on Friday, June 17.
